In the course of 23 days, my four-person household was cut in half. While we had COVID and were forced to send my grandmother to a nursing home so that she didn’t catch it, she died of cancer. We were devastated that we couldn’t be by her side in her final moments, but she was at peace, and we could take some solace in that. We dipped into our savings and hoped we could stay afloat long enough to figure out how to carry on. On Tuesday, March 9th, my uncle died unexpectedly at home from complications of COVID pneumonia. There was nothing that could have prepared us for it.
With the loss of two people so dear to us, it feels petty to think and talk of finances, and if I’m honest it makes me angry that we have to, but that is the reality of the world we live in. My mother and Steve’s son have medical bills and funeral costs to cope with, my household has to cope with the loss of two incomes, and I’m on a fixed income from my disability.
